Landslide by Jorge Exposito

Vargas, Venezuela

by Jorge Exposito

The earth itself becomes violent.

On December 23, 1999 there was a big landslide in my town—Vargas, Venezuela—that killed many people, and we lost many things like my house, my mom’s store, the cars, everything.

The disaster began on December 15. At 3:00 in the morning it started raining. It rained hard for eight days, and every day seemed longer until the day that a new island appeared in the Caribbean Sea and a volcano appeared in my town. My mom suffered a lot, but we are strong and we survived, and twelve years later we are in Florida, USA.
