This past Monday I took about forty souls - homeschooled children and their parents - hiking at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol VA.
We had a blast. All of us. But then, I can’t recall ever taking children and parents on a hike when we didn’t all have a great time learning together.
The thing is; if you are a homeschooled student, you almost certainly have many opportunities to do this type of wondrous “nature” learning - much more so than if your attend American public schools.
Yet please let me state upfront and unequivocally - I remain a huge and fervent supporter of American schools. I gave 30 years of my life teaching there.
The main reason we should all, every single American citizen, support public schools is a very simple one - if public schools ever cease to exist, so will our nation as a republic.
However at the elementary-age level, in particular, I would also like to go on record as being in support of homeschooling and private options to public schools - for those who have the opportunity.
And that’s another thing - not every child has the opportunity to go homeschool or private. Far from it. But every single child in America has the opportunity and the right to attend a public school.
Now back to why I think homeschooling can be a good option, particularly when our children are young.
