Little Johnny liked to fight. He was reared that way, out of a sense of honor. Not everyone understands this “fight culture”, but I sought to do so, as best I could. I found that it stems, not from a mean spirit, but from a sense of self-defense, self-survival, and family honor.
It’s probably easy for many people to “look down” on this culture as barbaric, simply because they don’t understand it. Very early on in my elementary school teaching career, I discovered that as long as these “fight culture” kids and parents felt your intentions were good, you could get by with saying anything to them – without a fight. I came to look past the surface and found these people to be as “deep-down good” at heart as anyone.
