What is the funniest thing I ever heard a child say during my teaching career?
Gosh, I feel I couldn’t begin to tell you. I likely could make a list a mile long; I heard so many innocently humorous words proceed forth daily from the mouths of babes.
I also heard some of the wisest words I’ve ever heard.
Following are a few of the funny - and sometimes quite profound - words I heard spoken to me over the years by some elementary students of mine during my career. (I threw in the words of a couple of parents and a jail inmate/student for good measure.)
One day my students were all “drawing their learning” at their desks. (We did this type of learning activity often in my classroom. Though too seldom used in public education, I found it to be truly such a wonderful learning activity. Since we humans could draw literally tens of thousands of years before we could write words - our minds are so naturally geared toward art). Then I heard a pair of little feet patter slowly up to my desk. I looked up to see the saintliest little girl staring at me, working up enough courage to say words she felt so compelled to say - straight from the kindness of her heart.
“Mr. Talley, I love you even if you are old and bald. I know you can’t help any of it.”
Kids will tell you the truth they feel, plain and beautiful.
